Regular Show is Regular

“Regular Show” is a beloved animated television series that captivated audiences with its offbeat humor, eclectic characters, and nostalgic references. Created by J.G. Quintel, the show follows the surreal adventures of two best friends, a blue jay named Mordecai and a raccoon named Rigby, who work as groundskeepers at a park. Filled with bizarre occurrences, supernatural elements, and a dash of 80s and 90s pop culture, “Regular Show” became a cult favorite for its unique blend of absurdity and heartwarming moments, appealing to both kids and adults alike.

The show starts off with the two friends playing wrestling, until they break a hole in the wall. The two friends decide they need to get raises but don’t know how, this leads Rigby to pull out his keyboard he took from a wizard. Whatever you said while playing the keyboard came true. So with the power of the keyboard they convince Benson (their boss) to give them a raise. When they receive the money Rigsby said, “You know what this means” Mordecai says, “We can get the wall fixed”, and Rigsby said, “No we can do anything we want.” After this was a montage of them doing random activities. I enjoy this as the first episode, it shows the characters personalities, basically introducing them to us. We can tell that Mordecai is the friend that sometimes thinks logically while Rigsby is the friend that lacks common sense.

While they are doing these random activities they run into skips with their fellow coworker. Though while talking to him they think Skipps  is on to what they’re doing, causing them to accidentally send him to the moon with the keyboard. When they realize what they have done they end up telling Pops and Benson the truth, so they can all go save him. As they arrive on the moon they have to fight a beast to save Skipps. When the beast is defeated they wish themselves back home, where they get their keyboard taken. As the other friends leave the room Mordecai and Rigsby realize there is still a hole in the wall. Ultimately that was the end of the first episode.  I truly liked it, the ending even added more for me because the hole never got fixed. It shows how immature and unfocused their characters are, which is a good aspect because most kid cartoons always have a good ending but this one is original.

On to the next episode, it starts with Benson assigning everybody a job and he gives Mordecai and Rigsby the easiest one. To set up the chairs, when they hear this they get upset because they are always stuck with the lamest jobs. Benson tells them it’s because he can’t trust them to do anything important. This challenges the two, making them tell Benson they can set up the chairs, but next time they want a serious job. When Benson agrees they go to set up the chairs. While setting them up they become mad because they think Benson never has to do chores or work. Although Benson gets the hardest job of them all, taking care of the park and making everything go as planned. I like this part because this is a kid show, and kids truly think bosses or parents don’t do anything. Though in reality they do the most, and this showcases that for kids even if they don’t realize.

As Mordecai and Rigsby set up the chairs they realize they need more chairs. Leading them to go look at in the store room where they discover old arcade games.  When they find the games Rigsby goes to play, fully forgetting about his job, Mordecai tries to tell him they need to work but he doesn’t listen. As Rigby keeps playing games he finds one that says out of order and decides to play it. When he plays it it unleashes a destructive force setting everything on fire and ruining the party. Eventually Mordecai and Rigsby lock it back up, but unfortunately they still have to deal with the wrath of benson. He tells them they will never be trusted with another important job again not even setting up the chairs. When the two hear this new they instantly cheer because they heard they don’t have to set up chairs. Acting just like children, which is good because that’s the audience.

In the next episode it opens with Mordecai and Rigby playing a new game. They start to argue about which character they want to be, and agree to settle it through a game of punchies. When Rigby loses it sets him off because he has never won, this leads him to having a fit and calling death kwon do. When he calls he sets an appointment where he steals the instructions to the punch of death. Eventually he learns the punch of death and feels empowered. This leads him to try to play punchies with Mordecai but little does he know Mordecai knows the death block. This sets Rigby off, causing him to consistently throw punches until he says, I’m tired of you always winning. When Mordecai  heard this he realized he always did one up Rigby, causing him to feel bad and faking he’s hurt. This makes Rigby happy and forget about all the trouble he just went through. This episode was good because it showed how much someone’s pride can affect them.

The next episode is pretty odd but I digress. The show starts with all the coworkers getting ready for a barbecue.  Benson tells Mordecai and Rigby to take the hotdogs outside but not to cook them. As we know the friends are not the smartest so they confuse benson words and start to grill the hotdogs. When they are grilling the grill catches on fire and this makes Mordecai mad because he feels Benson always blames him for Rigby mistakes. Rigsby comes up with the idea to get the other hot dogs out meat locker. While in the meat lockers the door closed locking them in there. This sets Mordecai off, causing him to tell Rigby he is always ruining things. When hearing this Rigsby finds a way to get them out the freezer. He finds hotdogs and make a deal with them to free them. When they are set free the hot dogs start to attack them while marinating them in sauce. basically trying to eat them. To save them, Rigby pours mustard on all the hot dogs leading them to eat each other. Regular show is so iconic because it makes random normal scenarios into something crazy. Mostly this, this was bazar and not seen coming, making all the hot dogs eat each other i mean what in the cannibalism

The next episode is just like the rest, a normal scenario that goes bad. However the jokes are to die for. In one part of the episode Rigby was about to call Mordecai a piece of shit but before he could say shit Mordecia  punches him. I don’t know if you guys find cut offs funny , but I do. Another joke was when 2 guys were cutting in front of them and Mordecia said Those pork loins are cutting. To be honest I don’t know why this cracked me up but it was random which made it funny. Throughout the episode the friends had to lie, and whoever admitted their lie first lost. So as the situation gets worse someone needs to admit so they can get help, but instead Mordecai says, “I have a condition that makes me forget everything in times of extreme stress”. I like this part because it shows how much pride Mordecai has and continues to be funny.  Ultimately the show also has good jokes for kids and adults that are still subtle.

As the show goes on Mordecai is trying to get a girl but everything he does fail. So he ends up getting this cologne that accidentally makes dudes pop up.  The dudes tell him they can help him with getting the girls but they end up doing the complete opposite. Overall telling Mordecai to be himself because that’s what wins in the end. Then in the next episode it starts with the 2 friends doing prank calls on all their friends enjoying their day. Until they realize they are not the best prank callers ever, challenging to become the best. They try to prank the best prank caller and end up in the 80s because the prank caller says the 80 wants their phone back. The 2 friends end up finally pranking the best, making them go back to the present. This was good because it shows the consequences of doing a bad deed overall.

Then soonly comes the season finale. Benson starts by telling Mordecai and Rigby the park is having an Audit. He asks if anyone knows someone who can help, Mordecai instantly says Rigby brother Don. Right when Mordecai says this Rigby gets mad and tells him he doesn’t want Don to help. Mordecai asks why and it shows a flashback of Don impressing all of Rigby’s friends by accident. It shows that Rigby is jealous of Don’s charm that he’s never had. Rigby’s relationship with Don is strained due to Rigby’s resentment towards him. Rigby feels overshadowed by Don’s success and competence, leading to a sense of inferiority. While Don, on the other hand, appears to be more responsible and accomplished, contrasting with Rigby’s slacker tendencies. This contrast creates tension between the two characters, with Rigby often feeling insecure and defensive in Don’s presence. However, as the series progresses, their relationship develops as they confront various challenges together. Despite their differences, Rigby comes to realize that Don genuinely care about him and wants to see him succeed. This realization leads to a deeper bond between the brothers, as Rigby learns to appreciate Don’s guidance and support.

Overall that was the end of season 1. A rollercoaster of a show, not knowing what will happen next, originality, humor, slight relatability, and good pacing. I truly love the show but as I have said in other reviews I still must say what it lacks. Due to this being a cartoon I feel the show could have had better color theory implanted. I mean its digital meaning you can use any color you want. I even bring this into consideration because other shows on the same network such as, “Steven Universe” and “Adventure Time” use color. Though Regular Show did not. Another factor that the show lacks is design, being logical, and good editing. Therefore I would have to give it a three, don’t get me wrong. In my eyes it will be a 5 but in the precious evaluation it would be a three. I hope you enjoyed it and come back next time for a precious evaluation.
